Introduction

The Sultanate of Oman, in common with the Gulf Region as a whole, has advanced significantly over recent years, both in economic and industrial terms. The Omani government, under the visionary leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, has worked systematically and consistently towards creating a modern country fully engaged in global debate on the key issues of our time. Given its location amid the oil-yielding states of the Middle East, it is natural that Oman should give particular emphasis to the global discussion regarding natural resources and their sustainable development. The dissemination of research, knowledge and expertise within this area forms the context of this international conference.

The Caledonian College of Engineering (CCE) has been contributing to the social, economic and industrial development of the Gulf region for over 12 years through high quality technological education. Established in Oman through an affiliation with Glasgow Caledonian University (UK), CCE is now recognised as one of the most successful private colleges in the Sultanate. In organising this conference on renewable energy resources, CCE’s chief aim is to provide an opportunity for representatives from various international, national and regional sectors to share strategic level discussions on harnessing technology in this field. This will be achieved through the presentation of research papers and through providing the opportunity for both formal and informal dialogue throughout the two-day period. It is hoped that the conference will thereby help identify future needs, expand on current innovation and promote target-effective, goal-orientated solutions for key issues in renewable energy resources, relevant to the region.

With a track record of arranging regional and international conferences, CCE is well placed to host this second ICHT event, particularly given the college’s proven interest in the field of renewable energy and the research partnership it shares with IFEED.

Conference History

The first International Conference on Harnessing Technology, 12th -13th of October 2008,  received an overwhelming response from participants, with papers presented by academicians, researchers, industrialists and other members of the international community involved in this sector. The idea of holding a second conference on the broad theme of harnessing technology, but focused particularly on issues of alternative energy sources, the environment and natural resources, arose out of the success of the first conference which illustrated the value of sharing knowledge and research across a broad spectrum of experts in the field.   It is hoped that this conference will ensure that the ICHT becomes a biannual fixture in the conference calendar.

Caledonian College of Engineering has conducted a number of conferences and seminars including the following:

  • National Conference on Design and Construction Practices in Hot and Arid Regions
  • Regional Conference on Recent Trends in Maintenance Management
  • Host to UICEE 9th Annual International Conference on Engineering Education
